Seven Weekends Left!

Seven Weekends Left!

Posted on Mar 17, 2017

There are seven more weekends left to enjoy our summer lounge before we close for the winter! We still have the Overstrand Late Summer Festival running at the lounge with different exhibitions taking place each week. There is an exciting line up during Easter, more details to follow soon! The lounge has been such a hit so far among locals and tourists in Hermanus, they love to relax and put their feet up! Have a look here!   In February we had the honor of hosting a very special event with The Global Challenge at our restaurant. Monique Kalkman, an amazing paraplegic sports woman, was asked to help raise funds for OAPD by sharing her story at Dutchies amongst friends, locals and professional female golf players from around the world. Monique, after being diagnosed with cancer became paralyzed from the waist down. Monique revisited her dreams and became the only Paralympic champion, in two sports namely, wheelchair tennis and table tennis. She became the first and only female athlete in two different individual sports winning golden Paralympic medals. Her inspirational story she shared with us has left footprints in our hearts! During her time in Hermanus, Monique was invited to host a tennis and table tennis workshop for the disabled in Hawston with the clients of OAPD. It left them with a refreshing look at overcoming obstacles and pursuing their dreams!  Thank you to Monique and Tania from the The Global Challenge for allowing Dutchies to be apart of this special initiative and event!  On Sunday the 19th of March during the afternoon, Dutchies will be welcoming the Lighthouse to Lighthouse ladies from their 100 km walk. The restaurant will be closed during that time and will reopen for dinner!    Totsiens Joke and Daan P.S Save the Date for Jazz Evening on the 31 March and Kings Day on the 27th April!                ...

Living in cosmic harmony…

Living in cosmic harmony…

Living in cosmic harmony… We’re well into our third year as owners of Dutchies and still, each day, we are so grateful to be able to work in such a pristine and peaceful place. Daan will tell you that the moment he first came to Dutchies, he knew, this was where he wanted to be. And this hasn’t changed. In fact our love for Hermanus and this very special spot on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world has got much stronger. For us it is a place that is an embodiment of a cosmic harmony. The Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian, was inspired by a spiritual belief in a harmonious cosmos. He used pure abstraction and the reduction of form and colour to the essentials to symbolise the universality of things.   New menu Our new menu has been inspired by Mondrian’s work as a tribute to this very special restaurant on Grotto Beach, and as a symbol of the touch of Dutch love we’re grateful to bring to it. Do come and have a look at it…and what’s inside it! There are of course our iconic dishes like De Uitsmijter, Bitter Ballen and the awesome Club Sandwich; but there are also new dishes Chef Jana has added that showcase her innovative approach to a rustic fine dining experience with a Dutch twist. In other words – DELISH! Light Jazz & Show Tunes We have live music this coming Friday (31st July) evening from 6pm. The fire will be blazing, the gas heaters on and cosy throws at the ready. Alan Cameron and friends will be performing and are a delight to watch and listen to. Alan is a South African jazz pianist of note, as well as an accomplished composer and sound man. Tot...

Moederdag – Bloemendag

Moederdag – Bloemendag

Posted on Apr 30, 2015

Moederdag – Bloemendag In the Netherlands, Mother’s Day was introduced in 1910 by the Dutch branch of the Salvation Army. In 1925, the Royal Dutch Society for Horticulture and Botany, a group protecting the interest of Dutch florists, seeing the success enjoyed by florists in the USA, started working together to promote the holiday. In the 1930s and 1940’s the tradition of giving “Mother’s Day cakes” as gifts in hospitals, to the Dutch Queen and to your mother, became popular. No matter the origin the Dutch, like the rest of the world, enjoy honouring the women in their lives who have filled the role of Mother – be they grandmothers, godmothers, aunts or mothers. Celebrate the ladies that rock your world with a breakfast or lunch at Dutchies on Mother’s Day. There will be delectable specials and all Mum’s will get a glass of bubbly. Please remember to book! Take a look at these beautiful paintings of Mothers by Dutch...

The perfect Winter Warmer

The perfect Winter Warmer

There’s nothing quite like a cup of Anijsmelk to keep the cold at bay. This traditional Dutch drink is made my crushing aniseed into milk. It’s a perfect bedtime drink because it helps you sleep and helps digestion. We also drink it when we’re ice-skating because it warms you up from the inside out. Here is a recipe from Nicole Holten of The Dutch Table to make it the traditional Dutch way. 1 cup of milk 1 full teaspoon of aniseed 2 teaspoons of sugar or honey Warm the milk with the seeds, either loose or in a tea egg. Bring to a slow boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for a good 5 minutes. Pour the milk through a strainer to remove the seeds, add sugar or honey to taste. Drink Warm. Welterusten! You can also buy “tablets” – Anijsblokke – but it’s not quite the same as the real thing! Let us know if you try it and how you like...
