Cosy up at Dutchies We have been having a wonderful winter so far. It has been busy at Dutchies over the Hermanus Fynarts Festival and our first de Tafel van de Chef was a huge success. Coming up is Father’s Day, Vaderdag, and we have a special menu that we know Dads are going to love! Funky Biltong Salad, Blesbok and Bread & Butter pudding for R205. Please book to avoid disappointment! Palm Strings will be playing next Friday in our month-end live music slot; and then we will have our next De Tafel van de Chef on the 8th of July. Remember you can cosy up at Dutchies even if the weather is gloomy. Our fire, gas heaters, throws, hearty dishes and warm Dutch hospitality are sure to keep you toasty! Tot...

You’re going to eat this up!

You’re going to eat this up!

You’re going to eat this up! There’s no question about it. The dishes coming out of the Big Green Egg are going to delight your taste buds! Chef Mark, who has recently joined us from New York, is Master of the Big Green Egg! The roast lamb he prepared for Sunday lunch was a melt-in-your-mouth marvel. He’ll be cooking up a storm in the Big Green Egg on Friday and Saturday evenings, as well as for Saturday and Sunday lunch. If you haven’t tasted dishes prepared in the Big Green Egg you’re missing out. The Rocket Scientists The Big Green Egg is a ridiculously versatile cooker inspired by an ancient clay cooking device known as a “kamado” that results in food simply tasting better. You can grill, roast, flame-grill and even bake in it. We can’t wait to taste what Mark creates in it next! De Tafel van der Chef is on Wednesday 3rd June. First up is Iona Vineyards. We’ll be joined by one of their winemakers to eat, taste, compare and enjoy their wines with dishes designed by Chef Jana to match the wine. It is ESSENTIAL to book so we know how many to cater for. Space is also limited to ensure the evening is intimate. Looking forward to seeing you out and about this winter – there is no excuse for cabin fever – just head to Dutchies!  ...

Iona Wines are first up at De Tafel van der Chef We are so excited because it is almost time for our first ‘De Tafel van de Chef’! On Wednesday the 3rd of June one of the winemakers from Iona vineyards will join us to eat, taste, compare and enjoy their wines with a dish designed by Chef Jana to match the wine. Iona is the coolest vineyard in the Cape, 420m above sea-level, high on the Perdeberg mountains above the picturesque Elgin Valley. They make Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and a divine red blend called ‘One Man Band’. This will be an evening filled not only with exciting tastes but also good conversation, the company of friends and (knowing our patrons) lots of laughter. It is ESSENTIAL to book before Monday 25th May so we know how many to cater for. Space is also limited to ensure the evening is...

De Tafel van de Chef

De Tafel van de Chef This winter we will be offering some exciting events to ensure you get out and about and have the opportunity to escape the effects of cabin fever. ‘De Tafel van de Chef’ is one of these exciting events. Once a month we will gather to eat, taste, compare and enjoy local wines with a new dish designed by Chef Jana to match the wine. Winemakers will be digging deep into their cellars to find their favourite vintages of a particular varietal. Chef Jana will then ‘invent’ a dish to pair with that varietal. We can then enjoy a vertical tasting and the latest tastes coming from the kitchen! Sometimes the winemaker may even bring a ‘cloudy’ bottle from one of their barrels to see how it compares. This will be an evening filled not only with exciting tastes but also good conversation, the company of friends and, knowing our patrons, lots of laughter. Jana is in her element. These evenings will provide her with the unique opportunity to push her creative boundaries, test new dishes and show us what she’s got! Would you like to join us? Experience new tastes; let old vintages bring back memories and new ones provide an excuse to fill up the cellar! Both Jana and the winemaker will spend the evening with us and we are limiting seats to 30 to ensure the evening stays as personal as possible. Bookings must please be made at least 2 weeks before the evening so that we can ensure everyone is catered for. The first date is Wednesday 3rd June 2015. BOOK NOW...

The perfect Winter Warmer

The perfect Winter Warmer

There’s nothing quite like a cup of Anijsmelk to keep the cold at bay. This traditional Dutch drink is made my crushing aniseed into milk. It’s a perfect bedtime drink because it helps you sleep and helps digestion. We also drink it when we’re ice-skating because it warms you up from the inside out. Here is a recipe from Nicole Holten of The Dutch Table to make it the traditional Dutch way. 1 cup of milk 1 full teaspoon of aniseed 2 teaspoons of sugar or honey Warm the milk with the seeds, either loose or in a tea egg. Bring to a slow boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for a good 5 minutes. Pour the milk through a strainer to remove the seeds, add sugar or honey to taste. Drink Warm. Welterusten! You can also buy “tablets” – Anijsblokke – but it’s not quite the same as the real thing! Let us know if you try it and how you like...
