There’s nothing quite like a cup of Anijsmelk to keep the cold at bay.
This traditional Dutch drink is made my crushing aniseed into milk. It’s a perfect bedtime drink because it helps you sleep and helps digestion. We also drink it when we’re ice-skating because it warms you up from the inside out.
Here is a recipe from Nicole Holten of The Dutch Table to make it the traditional Dutch way.
1 cup of milk
1 full teaspoon of aniseed
2 teaspoons of sugar or honey
Warm the milk with the seeds, either loose or in a tea egg. Bring to a slow boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for a good 5 minutes. Pour the milk through a strainer to remove the seeds, add sugar or honey to taste. Drink Warm. Welterusten!
You can also buy “tablets” – Anijsblokke – but it’s not quite the same as the real thing!
