A Calypso of Cocktails

Grotto Beach is gorgeous at the moment!! Spring is certainly in the air and we are loving being open in the evenings again. There’s nothing quite like a walk on the beach, a breathtaking sunset and a cocktail to end the day. And yes…we have a calypso of cocktails on the menu – alcoholic and non-alcoholic. There are the all time favourites like Diaquiries, Mojitos and Bongitos; and we have created a new one for the Summer with Tonic, Peach Schnapps, Mint and La Vierge’s Nymphomane. Come and taste it…and come up with a name for it – your cocktails could be on us! De Tafel van de Chef is fully booked this month so please book now for October to avoid disappointment. Alan Cameron will be playing this Friday from 6pm; we’ll be celebrating Prinsjes Dag on Tuesday the 22nd of September with specials those with a sweet tooth will love; and we’ll be having live entertainment as part of the Whale Fringe Festival at the end of the month. So put on your skirts, shorts and slops and join us for some...

What will La Vierge’s wines of desire inspire? La Vierge wines will be featuring at our next De Tafel van de Chef on the 6th of August 2015. Chef Jana is already planning and testing the dishes she’ll be pairing them with and if the last of her creations are anything to go by we’re in for a treat! The La Vierge wine estate, French for “The Virgin”, lies in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley just outside Hermanus. They make a range of wines but their speciality is Pinot Noir. The La Vierge vineyards, are situated on Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge where the long cool summers and the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean provide the ideal environment for cultivating vines. “The unspoiled beauty and provenance of our virgin terroir is reflected in the Garden of Eden theme of our branding, suggesting a lush verdant paradise with all the purity, simplicity, innocence and temptation of life’s beginnings. This is a place of distinction, where we celebrate outstanding Pinot Noir wines, wines of desire.” Join the winemaker, Chef Jana and a gathering of food and wine lovers for a food pairing that will definitely be worth writing home about! We’re looking forward to the tastes these ‘wines of desire’ inspire in Chef Jana. Places are limited so please book before Monday 3rd August to secure your spot.  ...

De Tafel van de Chef a great success!

Posted on Jun 16, 2015

Our first De Tafel van de Chef was a great success! A group of patrons and friends gathered to pair Iona Wines with Chef Jana’s creations designed specifically for each wine. What an atmosphere! As one of the guests wrote on Tripdavisor “From very generous portions to good conversation, it was an evening, we hope will be repeated by this new team that heads up the floor & kitchen of Dutchies..” The menu consisted of Amuse Warm Cucumber Soup paired with the Iona Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Rose Goatcheese with beetroot salsa paired with Iona’s Sauvignon Blanc Salmon Trout paired with the Iona Chardonnay Lamb with the One Man Band red and then topped off with Chocolate Marquise for dessert with grappa Verrukkelijk…to say the least!!!...

You’re going to eat this up!

You’re going to eat this up!

Posted on May 19, 2015

You’re going to eat this up! There’s no question about it. The dishes coming out of the Big Green Egg are going to delight your taste buds! Chef Mark, who has recently joined us from New York, is Master of the Big Green Egg! The roast lamb he prepared for Sunday lunch was a melt-in-your-mouth marvel. He’ll be cooking up a storm in the Big Green Egg on Friday and Saturday evenings, as well as for Saturday and Sunday lunch. If you haven’t tasted dishes prepared in the Big Green Egg you’re missing out. The Rocket Scientists The Big Green Egg is a ridiculously versatile cooker inspired by an ancient clay cooking device known as a “kamado” that results in food simply tasting better. You can grill, roast, flame-grill and even bake in it. We can’t wait to taste what Mark creates in it next! De Tafel van der Chef is on Wednesday 3rd June. First up is Iona Vineyards. We’ll be joined by one of their winemakers to eat, taste, compare and enjoy their wines with dishes designed by Chef Jana to match the wine. It is ESSENTIAL to book so we know how many to cater for. Space is also limited to ensure the evening is intimate. Looking forward to seeing you out and about this winter – there is no excuse for cabin fever – just head to Dutchies!  ...

De Tafel van de Chef

Posted on May 5, 2015

De Tafel van de Chef This winter we will be offering some exciting events to ensure you get out and about and have the opportunity to escape the effects of cabin fever. ‘De Tafel van de Chef’ is one of these exciting events. Once a month we will gather to eat, taste, compare and enjoy local wines with a new dish designed by Chef Jana to match the wine. Winemakers will be digging deep into their cellars to find their favourite vintages of a particular varietal. Chef Jana will then ‘invent’ a dish to pair with that varietal. We can then enjoy a vertical tasting and the latest tastes coming from the kitchen! Sometimes the winemaker may even bring a ‘cloudy’ bottle from one of their barrels to see how it compares. This will be an evening filled not only with exciting tastes but also good conversation, the company of friends and, knowing our patrons, lots of laughter. Jana is in her element. These evenings will provide her with the unique opportunity to push her creative boundaries, test new dishes and show us what she’s got! Would you like to join us? Experience new tastes; let old vintages bring back memories and new ones provide an excuse to fill up the cellar! Both Jana and the winemaker will spend the evening with us and we are limiting seats to 30 to ensure the evening stays as personal as possible. Bookings must please be made at least 2 weeks before the evening so that we can ensure everyone is catered for. The first date is Wednesday 3rd June 2015. BOOK NOW...
