Living in cosmic harmony…

Living in cosmic harmony…

Living in cosmic harmony… We’re well into our third year as owners of Dutchies and still, each day, we are so grateful to be able to work in such a pristine and peaceful place. Daan will tell you that the moment he first came to Dutchies, he knew, this was where he wanted to be. And this hasn’t changed. In fact our love for Hermanus and this very special spot on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world has got much stronger. For us it is a place that is an embodiment of a cosmic harmony. The Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian, was inspired by a spiritual belief in a harmonious cosmos. He used pure abstraction and the reduction of form and colour to the essentials to symbolise the universality of things.   New menu Our new menu has been inspired by Mondrian’s work as a tribute to this very special restaurant on Grotto Beach, and as a symbol of the touch of Dutch love we’re grateful to bring to it. Do come and have a look at it…and what’s inside it! There are of course our iconic dishes like De Uitsmijter, Bitter Ballen and the awesome Club Sandwich; but there are also new dishes Chef Jana has added that showcase her innovative approach to a rustic fine dining experience with a Dutch twist. In other words – DELISH! Light Jazz & Show Tunes We have live music this coming Friday (31st July) evening from 6pm. The fire will be blazing, the gas heaters on and cosy throws at the ready. Alan Cameron and friends will be performing and are a delight to watch and listen to. Alan is a South African jazz pianist of note, as well as an accomplished composer and sound man. Tot...

Be Warm!

Posted on Apr 30, 2015

Be Warm! Well Winter is most certainly on its way! It’s time for broths and comfort food which is exactly what our 2 new wonderful chefs have in store for you. It is also time for us to close in the evenings during the week for a while. From Monday May 3rd we will be open daily from 9am to 6pm and then for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. We’re prepared for the cold and have a fire burning on icy days, gas burners, and loads of wraps in case you get nippy. So don’t let the weather keep you away from Grotto Beach! It’s actually especially cosy in cold weather at Dutchies. There’s nothing quite like cosying up inside and watching the wild winter ocean and the weather passing through over a hearty, hot meal. We hope you enjoy this last long weekend before winter really sets in. Be warm – inside and...

Lighthouse to Lighthouse 2015

Lighthouse to Lighthouse 2015

Posted on Mar 12, 2015

It’s that wonderful time of year again. It’s Autumn, so days are often mild but sunny and we’re hoping the Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse ladies have 4  glorious days for their annual walk. They leave today (12th March) from the Agulhas Lighthouse and walk along the coastline to Danger Point Light House in Gansbaai and then across Die Plaat arriving on Grotto Beach at about 4pm. The walk is stunning, but by no means easy, and the ladies who do it raise a large amount of money to help local Overstrand charities. Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse consists of a group of women from the Overstrand, who annually walk approx 100 kilometers from Cape Agulhas to Danger Point Lighthouse over 4 days. In the beginning, the ladies carried everything they needed for the duration of the walk. Now, they camp at Die Dam for the period we are walking, carrying what we need for the day’s walk. Their aim is to raise money for charities which serve the Overstrand. Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse is not a charity itself, but a vehicle to raise money for registered causes. Every cent we collect is handed over to the charity of choice. Please contribute if you haven’t already, remember to make the reference the name of the walker you are sponsoring if applicable.
